I do believe this is officially my first blog post! It’s not a topic that I am the most passionate about, but it is something that has been on my mind lately.
Style. Everyone has a unique way in which they would like to portray themselves – and that almost always is evident in their style! It is such a fun and individual way to be artful on a daily basis. And I’m not talking just clothes either. To me, style is an evolving combination of aesthetics plus demeanor. Being comfortable in a person’s own skin is so important, and sometimes it is fun to embellish what you’re already working with.
My personal style is interesting to describe. When I’m teaching middle school, I wear bland and appropriate clothing. This is intentional because, as an adult that students are looking at all day every day, I want to emphasize the importance of developing the thoughts in your head and the words that you speak. Our society is inundated with visual information. In my classroom, I work hard to foster an environment where we all listen to each other with our ears, minds, and hearts. (slight tangent – let’s make this an invite 2 write topic later!)
In real life, or a non-teaching setting, I really like to have thoughtful, and at times creative style. I’ve always loved patterns and vintage, and lately I’ve been obsessed with eco-friendly and ethical clothing. If you ask the people in my life, they will tell you when it comes to getting dressed, I’m about 75% on point, and 25% might be wearing the same outfit as your grandmother (or grandfather, if I’m being really honest). It’s a tricky balance, and one that I’m hopefully continuing to master.
Makeup is not a huge part of my life. I am interested in learning more about the creation of products, application in a creative way, and other aspects. I use cleansing and toning products on my face and will almost always be wearing tinted chapstick and mascara.
Hair. I’ve been told by many that this is what people notice first about me. While I know this is generally meant as a compliment, in the past I took it upon myself to misconstrue this information in every way possible. So, while I love and am grateful for my hair, I grow and donate it as frequently as I can. I do not use a ton of heating products to style; I am currently obsessed with braids, dry shampoo, and moisture mist. Oh, and after a year, I still struggle from time to time regarding life with bangs. Everything is a process.
I’ve been so fortunate to collaborate with some super artful and creative people recently – so I am sure that I will have more style posts soon!
In the meantime, I’m channeling my inner ‘retiree on vacation’.
Have a fantastic Tuesday!
